Encouraged Family Outside Reading
Each Arete family is encouraged to purchase one shared family copy of The God Proofs: How Science Points to YOUR Creator by Douglas Ell. This is outside reading, not a class-specific text, and it may or may not be referred to in class.

Investigators
A hands-on physical science tutorial where students investigate waves, magnets, electricity, and energy while learning to explain what they observe clearly and accurately.

Investigators introduces upper-elementary students to physics through three living-science spines on magnets, sound waves, and electricity. Each two-hour tutorial combines living-book reading, oral narration, teacher demonstrations, collaborative experiments, commonplace-journal diagrams, short written responses, guided big-idea discussion, and age-appropriate measurement and unit-conversion practice.
When time allows, the teacher may also read aloud from an age-appropriate novel with a science theme.
What Students Will Do
- Observe physical phenomena, predict outcomes, describe evidence, and revise explanations
- Narrate scientific readings and keep an orderly commonplace journal
- Complete collaborative investigations and age-appropriate measurement practice
- Use the cobalt Investigators Anki deck for brief, consistent review
- Complete three shorter quizzes and one longer midterm or final each term
- Complete and present one independent science project per semester
Required Materials
- A 1½-inch binder with six dividers and a zippered binder pouch
- A durable commonplace journal suited to writing and diagrams
- Pencils, a good eraser, a contained pencil sharpener, colored pencils, and fine-tip black drawing pens
- A ruler showing inches and centimeters and child-safe scissors
- Optional: a small pencil compass and protractor
Provided by the tutorial: classroom copies of all three course books, glue, shared experimental materials, and required protective equipment.

Annual tuition is $330 plus a $50 materials fee, for a total of $380—approximately $10.56 per week across the 36-week program. Children of Arete teachers receive a $50 tuition discount per enrolled student. Scale How School is a nonprofit; tuition supports teacher compensation and the materials fee pays for course materials.

This class meets in South Kaysville, Utah. Enrollment is selective and limited to seven students.
